So your teen will start driving soon, and it's causing a few gray hairs. We get it. Between the upcoming increases in your car insurance cost and your teen's safety, there’s a lot on your mind.
Fortunately, we can help ease both concerns. Contact your insurance agent to answer your questions about car insurance for teens, and get peace of mind knowing they’ll help you find the right auto insurance protection for your family.
Car insurance for young drivers will almost certainly be more expensive. That’s because teen drivers have less experience and higher accident rates, which means car insurance companies see them as much riskier to insure.
But there is good news. For one, it may cost less to insure your teen as they get older. Again, the cost is based largely on driving experience; car insurance for 18-year-olds, for example, will likely be slightly less than for a 16-year-old. (This is highly dependent upon your teen’s driving record. If they have accidents or tickets, you likely won’t see much in the way of savings.)
You can further offset cost if you qualify for our auto insurance discounts. Review your insurance with your agent to make sure you are getting the most insurance value for your dollar.
Our Simply Drive discount offers peace of mind and savings for your family. Your young driver will complete a thorough driving safety course, and once they successfully complete it, you'll get up to a 10% discount on car insurance for your teenager.
Turn good grades into car insurance savings. If you have a teen driver on your insurance, encourage them to keep their grades up; full-time students with at least a B grade point average could save up to 35% on car insurance.
We also offer discounts for recent college grads. If your teen has recently completed their degree and are under 25, send us their college transcripts or diploma and we'll give you an auto insurance discount.
Are you a safe driver? With DriverIQ, you could save up to 25% on your car insurance. Sign up, download the app, and we’ll track metrics like acceleration, braking, cornering, and phone use each time you drive. Get good safety scores and start saving!
You could save if your teen successfully completes a state-approved driver’s education and/or a motor vehicle defensive driving course. This discount isn’t available in all states, so check with your insurance agent to make sure it’s offered in your area.
If your teen gets stuck or has a breakdown on the road, our Roadside Assistance Coverage can help reimburse the costs of:
You care about your teen's safety. So do we.
We’ve partnered with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) for over 40 years to support their mission to “reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage due to motor vehicle crashes.”
Your teen needs to be at least 19 years old to get their own policy. If they’re under 19, they can only get their own auto insurance policy with us if their parents insure their cars with COUNTRY Financial.
It depends whether your teen lives in your home. If they do, it's a good idea to add your teenager to your policy. Insurance companies consider teen drivers a higher risk to all cars in the household because, theoretically, they could drive any car your family owns. In other words, if your teen lives with you, your insurance rates will increase whether they're on your policy or their own.
Encourage your teen to not allow friends to borrow their car. If they do, and the friend is in an accident, the liability may fall under your auto insurance policy, depending on the circumstances of the accident.
To that end, make sure you have higher levels of liability coverage for any inexperienced drivers on your auto insurance. If your child is at fault for hitting another car or injuring someone, you may have to pay thousands of dollars in expenses if you don't have enough liability protection.
Talk to your insurance agent about adding an umbrella liability policy. When you have an inexperienced driver in your household, that additional level of liability insurance protection could be an important part of your financial plan.
